The Important Things You Need to Do after Moving

Congratulations on your move! What should you do now that all of your stuff is at your new house? It’s not as easy as just moving in and setting up your furniture. In addition to “moving,” you must do several other things.

Moving to a new city might cause confusion and the unsettling sense that you don’t belong. Time typically helps you get over the first shock, but the post-move period can be pretty tricky, especially if you don’t know what to do after a transfer.

The checklist below will give suggestions for what to do after moving into a new home.

1. Examine Your New Home

What happens now that you’ve just moved in and had a massive pile of boxes full of belongings awaiting your unpacking? First and foremost, leave your boxes and go on a house tour. Examine the state of the area and the existing items found in the house: furniture, shelves, sofas, and tables.

2. Unpack the Necessities

What’s the first thing you take out of the box? Your overnight bags, or the items you bring with you if you go on a road trip: toothpaste and toothbrushes, sheets and towels, and a couple of change of clothes.

What do you need to live comfortably in your new home? You may need to unpack your home office immediately or be more concerned with the kitchen. You are the most acquainted with your desires and routines. Determine what is critical and start there.

3. Determine What Is Going Where

When moving into a new home, establishing a plan of attack for putting everything up rather than winging it will save you a lot of time and headache. This is particularly true for significant, heavy things such as furniture.

While you’re probably already aware of what belongs there, consider how you want the arrangement to look. Of course, adjustments can be made afterward, but starting this task with a basic plan will make the process easier.

4. Find the Fuse Box and the Water Valve

When you need a fuse box or a water valve, you don’t want to be looking for them. It’s far better to immediately make a mental note of their locations so you can get there quickly. Your fuse box is most likely located in your basement, garage, or storage room. In most homes, the water valve is located around the perimeter.

5. Change Your Address

Whether you relocated across town, to a new city within the same state, or across the country, your new postal address will be different. That means that unless you update your documents soon after moving, you will continue to receive regular mail at your primary address, which can be inconvenient for you and the new tenant in your old home

6. Conduct a Thorough Cleaning Session

Cleaning high comes before cleaning low. Ceiling fans, overhead lighting fixtures, shelving, and other items near the ceiling are just as susceptible to dirt and dust as furniture and flooring. Still, they aren’t cleaned as frequently and tend to distribute dirt and dust across the space below them when they are. Work your way down from the top of each room.

Moving into a new home is naturally stressful, but following the above steps can help ease the transition. There is plenty to accomplish, so do not hesitate to request assistance from a friend, relative, or professional service provider. The sooner the significant concerns are resolved, the sooner your new home will feel like a home.
